Day by day

The itinerary

A sample plan — every day can be changed.

  1. Day1

    Arrive in Delhi

Your driver meets you on arrival and takes you to your hotel. If there's time, spend the afternoon at Humayun's Tomb and the Qutb Minar and drive along Kartavya Path to India Gate; if not, rest after the flight.

    Overnight: Delhi

  2. Day2

Old Delhi, then the Taj Mahal at sunset

    Delhi → Agra · about 230 km, 3.5–4 hours

See the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, and ride a cycle-rickshaw through Chandni Chowk's lanes of spice, silver and fabric shops. Drive to Agra on the Yamuna Expressway in time to watch the Taj Mahal at sunset from Mehtab Bagh, across the Yamuna.

    Overnight: Agra

  3. Day3

Sunrise at the Taj, Fatehpur Sikri, Jaipur

Agra → Fatehpur Sikri → Jaipur · about 240 km, 4–5 hours plus stops

Visit the Taj Mahal at sunrise, then Agra Fort after breakfast. On the road to Jaipur, stop at Fatehpur Sikri, the red-sandstone city Akbar built and used as his capital for little more than a decade, and reach Jaipur by evening.

    Overnight: Jaipur

  4. Day4

Jaipur: Amer Fort and the walled city

Spend the morning at Amer Fort, the hill fort above Maota Lake and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the afternoon in the walled city: the City Palace, Jantar Mantar and the Hawa Mahal. Jaipur's bazaars are good for block-printed textiles, jewellery and mojaris (embroidered leather slippers).

    Overnight: Jaipur

  5. Day5

South to Udaipur by way of Chittorgarh

Jaipur → Chittorgarh → Udaipur · about 420 km, 7–8 hours plus the fort

A long day on the road, broken at Chittorgarh, one of the largest forts in India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you walk among palaces, temples and the 15th-century Tower of Victory. Arrive in Udaipur by evening.

    Overnight: Udaipur

  6. Day6

Udaipur: the City Palace and Lake Pichola

Spend the morning in the City Palace, the palace of the Maharanas of Mewar on the shore of Lake Pichola, and walk to the Jagdish Temple nearby. Late in the afternoon, take a boat on the lake past the Lake Palace to the island of Jag Mandir, and stay out for sunset. The folk-dance show at Bagore ki Haveli, usually held in the evening, is a short walk away.

    Overnight: Udaipur

  7. Day7

A day out from Udaipur, or a slow one

Choose how to spend it. A full day out takes in Kumbhalgarh, a hill fort whose walls run for kilometres across the Aravallis, and the marble Jain temple at Ranakpur. Or stay closer: a morning at Nathdwara, about an hour away, for darshan (seeing the deity) at the Shrinathji temple, or an easy day at Saheliyon ki Bari, Fateh Sagar Lake and the Monsoon Palace at sunset.

    Overnight: Udaipur

  8. Day8

    Fly home from Udaipur

    Udaipur → airport · about 22 km, 40 minutes

A last morning by the lake, then your driver takes you to Udaipur's Maharana Pratap Airport for your flight. Udaipur has direct flights to Delhi and Mumbai, where you can connect to international flights.

Good to know

Before you go

Road or air to Udaipur

Jaipur to Udaipur by way of Chittorgarh is a full day: about 420 km and 7–8 hours of driving, plus time at the fort. A short flight between the two cities saves the day on the road but skips Chittorgarh, so tell us which you prefer.

Planned around Friday

The Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, so we set your start date, or the order of the days, so that your Agra morning falls on another day.

Flying home from Udaipur

Udaipur's Maharana Pratap Airport has domestic flights to Delhi, Mumbai and other cities, so international travellers connect there and there's no drive back to Delhi. Leave a comfortable gap between the two flights, or book them on a single ticket.
