Day by day
A sample plan — every day can be changed.
Bhuj → Bhujodi and back · about 25 km
You're met at Bhuj airport or station. After lunch, see Aina Mahal and Prag Mahal in the old town, then drive out to Bhujodi, where families weave shawls and rugs on handlooms. If you start in Ahmedabad, this day is mostly the drive of about 330 km, and the palaces move to the next morning.
Overnight: Bhuj
Bhuj → Nirona → Dhordo · about 120 km, 2.5–3 hours
Drive north-west to Nirona, a village known for rogan (painting on cloth with a thick paste made from castor oil), copper bells and lacquerwork. Continue through the Banni grasslands to Dhordo, check in, and go out onto the White Rann for sunset; if the moon is up, stay on the salt after dark.
Overnight: Dhordo, by the White Rann
Dhordo → Kalo Dungar → Dhordo · about 100 km in all, with village stops
Drive to Kalo Dungar, the highest point in Kutch, for the view over the Great Rann, then stop at villages such as Khavda for hand-painted pottery and Hodka for embroidery. Back at Dhordo, take a slow afternoon, then return to the salt for sunset and, around a full moon, a walk under the moon.
Overnight: Dhordo, by the White Rann
Dhordo → Bhuj · about 85 km, 1.5–2 hours
After breakfast, drive back to Bhuj for your flight or train. If your timings allow, stop at Ajrakhpur, a village of ajrakh block printers just outside the town. If you are going on to Ahmedabad, Ajrakhpur is on the way, and the whole drive from Dhordo takes 7–8 hours.

Best time to go
November to February, when the salt is dry and white and the Rann Utsav tent city usually runs. Plan around a full moon if you can; the Rann floods in the monsoon.
Good to know
The White Rann needs a permit, available online or at the checkpost on the road from Bhuj. Carry photo ID for everyone; foreign nationals need their passport.
During Rann Utsav, usually November to February with dates announced each year, the tent city at Dhordo sells stays as packages with meals and evening programmes. At other times, or if you prefer, you stay at a resort near Dhordo, many with bhungas (round mud houses with conical thatched roofs).
December and January nights are cold out on the salt, while the days are bright and sunny. Bring a warm layer, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Questions
Four days is a comfortable Rann of Kutch trip: a day in Bhuj for the palaces and craft villages, and two nights at Dhordo for sunset, moonlight and Kalo Dungar. Add a day for Mandvi on the coast or for Dholavira.
Yes. The Rann of Kutch and Bhuj tour can start and end in Ahmedabad, about 330 km from Bhuj (6–7 hours by road), or you can take an overnight train to Bhuj. Starting in Ahmedabad turns the first day into a driving day, so most people add a day.
During Rann Utsav, usually November to February, the Rann of Kutch tour can include a stay in the tent city at Dhordo. Outside the festival, or if you prefer, you stay at a resort near Dhordo, often in bhunga-style rooms.
Book a Rann of Kutch tour as early as you can for November to February, especially around full moons, Diwali, Christmas and New Year, when tents and resorts near Dhordo fill first.
Yes. The Rann of Kutch tour has short walks on flat salt, village visits and drives of up to about three hours a day, so it suits children and older travellers; winter nights are cold, so pack warm layers.
