Rajasthan · 5 days / 4 nights
Three nights in Udaipur for the palaces, the lakes and an evening of folk dance, then a night in Mount Abu, Rajasthan's only hill station, for the marble Dilwara temples and sunset over the hills. Most days are unhurried, which suits couples and families; the one long day is the trip to Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur. Every day can be changed.

Day by day
A sample plan — every day can be changed.
Your driver meets you at Udaipur airport, about 22 km from the city, the station or your hotel. After a rest, walk down to Gangaur Ghat on Lake Pichola and spend the evening at Bagore ki Haveli, an 18th-century mansion whose courtyard hosts a show of Rajasthani folk dance; check the current show time.
Overnight: Udaipur
Spend the morning at the City Palace, a complex of palaces built over several centuries on the shore of Lake Pichola, and the 17th-century Jagdish temple near its gate. After lunch, visit Saheliyon ki Bari, an 18th-century garden of fountains and lotus pools, and drive along Fateh Sagar Lake. Take a boat ride on Lake Pichola at sunset, past the Lake Palace and the island palace of Jag Mandir.
Overnight: Udaipur
Udaipur → Kumbhalgarh → Ranakpur → Udaipur · about 220 km, 5–6 hours of driving
A full day in the Aravalli hills. In the morning, explore Kumbhalgarh, a 15th-century hill fort whose walls are said to run for about 36 km, and climb to the palace at the top for the view. After lunch, visit Ranakpur, where the 15th-century Jain temple has more than 1,400 carved marble pillars, and return to Udaipur in the evening.
Overnight: Udaipur
Udaipur → Mount Abu · about 165 km, 3–4 hours
Drive west to Mount Abu, with the last stretch a winding climb from Abu Road. After lunch, visit the Dilwara temples, a group of Jain temples carved in white marble between the 11th and 13th centuries, which usually open to visitors from about noon. End the day with a boat on Nakki Lake and sunset from Sunset Point.
Overnight: Mount Abu
Mount Abu → Udaipur · about 165 km, 3–4 hours
If you are up early, drive to Guru Shikhar, the highest point of the Aravalli range, about 15 km from town. Then head down the hill to Udaipur for your flight or train, allowing about four hours to the airport. You can also be dropped at Abu Road station, or in Ahmedabad (about 225 km) if you are travelling on to Gujarat.

Best time to go
October to March is the best time for Udaipur, with mild days and cool nights, while Mount Abu is colder, especially from December to February. From April to June, Mount Abu stays cooler than the plains but Udaipur is hot, and the monsoon (July to September) turns the hills green and usually fills the lakes.
Good to know
The Dilwara temples usually open to visitors from about noon; check current timings. Photography is not allowed inside, nor are leather items such as belts and bags, and shoulders and knees should be covered.
The Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur day has five to six hours on hill roads and a steep climb at Kumbhalgarh, so wear comfortable shoes. Kumbhalgarh comes first because Ranakpur's temple usually opens to visitors from about noon.
Mount Abu sits at about 1,200 m, so evenings are cool for much of the year and cold in winter; pack a warm layer. The road up from Abu Road is winding, so take something beforehand if anyone gets car-sick.
