Jaisalmer Desert Escape: the golden fort and a night in the dunes

Jaisalmer rises out of the Thar Desert in yellow sandstone, and this short trip shows it two ways: a day in the fort and the old town, and a night at a camp in the dunes, with a camel ride at sunset and folk music after dark. Two nights is enough for both without hurrying. Every day can be changed.

Day by day

The itinerary

A sample plan — every day can be changed.

  1. Day1

    Arrive in Jaisalmer

Your driver meets you at Jaisalmer station, the airport or your hotel; coming by road from Jodhpur, the drive is about 285 km, around five hours. In the late afternoon, go down to Gadisar Lake, an old reservoir lined with small temples and a carved stone gateway, and watch the light change on the water. Dinner on a rooftop facing the floodlit fort makes an easy first evening.

    Overnight: Jaisalmer

  2. Day2

The fort, the havelis and a night in the dunes

    Jaisalmer → Sam · about 40 km, 1 hour

Spend the morning inside Jaisalmer Fort, part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan UNESCO site, where families still live in the lanes around the palace museum and the carved Jain temples. Below the fort, see the stonework of Patwon ki Haveli and Salim Singh ki Haveli. After lunch, drive out to your camp near the dunes at Sam, stopping at the abandoned village of Kuldhara if you wish, for a camel ride at sunset, folk music and dinner.

Overnight: Desert camp near Sam or Khuri

  3. Day3

Sunrise on the dunes and departure

    Sam → Jaisalmer · about 40 km, 1 hour

Wake early for the sunrise over the sand, then have breakfast at the camp. Back in Jaisalmer, there may be time for Bada Bagh, a hillside of royal cenotaphs (chhatris) about 6 km north of town, before your train or flight, or you can continue to Jodhpur by road.

Best time to go

October to March is the season for Jaisalmer and the dunes, with warm days and nights that turn cold in December and January. Avoid April to June if you can: days are very hot, often above 40°C, and many desert camps close until the autumn.

Good to know

Before you go

What to wear in the desert

The sun is strong even in winter, so bring a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf for wind-blown sand. From December to February, nights at the camp are cold, so pack a warm jacket, and wear shoes you can slip off on the dunes.

Inside the fort

Jaisalmer Fort is lived in, so its lanes are narrow and busy with homes, shops and guesthouses. The Jain temples inside usually open to visitors only in the morning and do not allow leather items; check current timings.

The camel ride

The camel ride is short and led by a handler, and suits most ages. If anyone has back or knee trouble, a camel cart or a jeep can take you onto the dunes instead.

Questions

Jaisalmer Desert Escape: FAQs

How many days do I need in Jaisalmer?

Two nights is the usual length for Jaisalmer: one day for the fort, havelis and Gadisar Lake, and one night at a desert camp in the dunes. A third night allows a slower pace or a visit to quieter dunes such as Khuri.

Sam or Khuri: which dunes should we choose near Jaisalmer?

Sam, about 40 km west of Jaisalmer, is the best-known dune area, with many camps and a lively evening. Khuri, about 45 km to the south-west, is usually quieter, with fewer camps. Both have camel rides at sunset.

Is a Jaisalmer desert camp suitable for children and seniors?

Yes. Desert camps near Jaisalmer have proper beds, and many have tents with attached bathrooms; you choose the comfort level. Children usually enjoy the camel ride and the music, and seniors can go onto the dunes by camel cart or jeep instead.

Can we start the Jaisalmer trip from Jodhpur or Jaipur?

Yes. Jaisalmer is about 285 km from Jodhpur, around five hours by road, and about 560 km from Jaipur, so from Jaipur it makes sense to break the journey in Jodhpur or take a train. Jaisalmer's airport has limited, mostly seasonal flights, so check current schedules.

Do we need warm clothes for a desert camp in Jaisalmer?

From December to February, yes: nights in the desert near Jaisalmer can get very cold, sometimes close to freezing, so bring a warm jacket. In October, November and March, a light layer is usually enough.
